About the NY Jazz Symposium

Carl Allen - Director of the New York Jazz SymposiumThe New York Jazz Symposium was founded by its' director, Carl Allen. The goal of this educational organization is to provide master classes, workshops and clinics as well as curriculum development for the student ranging from elementary school through college level and beyond.

The workshop gives students the opportunity to dramatically improve their talent by intensely focusing on the key elements of instruction for jazz trumpet, trombone, saxophone (doubles as well), guitar, piano, bass and drums and vocals. Some of the activities include Master classes by instrument, Listening and Analysis classes, Jazz Improv, Jazz Theory, Special Topics, Small and Large Ensemble rehearsals. It will also prepare students for a future in music by teaching them essential skills and giving them the opportunity to meet artists that have already succeeded in the music business.

Drummer, composer, producer and educator Carl Allen has recorded and performed live around the world with countless jazz legends over the past three decades including: Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Woody Shaw, Jackie McLean, George Coleman, Ron Carter, Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Lena Horne, Sammy Davis Jr., and Sonny Stitt. Mr. Allen just completed 6 years as the Artistic Director for Jazz at the prestigious Juilliard School in NYC.

His students include Thelonious Monk International Competition winners and finalists and a generation of leading young jazz musicians. In addition to playing on nearly 200 recordings, Mr. Allen is an accomplished producer, and has been an Atlantic and Mack Avenue recording artist.

An accomplished clinician, Carl Allen, has led jazz education events around the world, including as the Director of the past 3 annual Trinity College Summer Jazz Camps at the University of Melbourne. In addition to The Juilliard School, Mr. Allen is the Artistic Consultant for Jazz Studies at Snow College in Ephraim, UT and part of the musicians with The Monk Institute for the annual Thelonious Monk Competition.
